VICE VERSA – Reflections on the essence of materials

The study »VICE VERSA – Reflections on the essence of materials« examines our interaction with and the effect of materials. By studying various materials, I tried to grasp their nature, their inherent principle.

I devoted myself to questions about the meaning of origin, context, property and effect for the material identity. What happens if I dedicate myself to the poetry of the material. What can a material communicate? How does it generate space? How does the essence of a material change in motion, in interaction with light, with shadow? Not only to understand materiality as a mere opposition to immateriality, but rather to consider the relationship that generates the perception of both, from an in–between, an environment.

Materials are subject to modifications and metamorphoses. With the seemingly endless possibilities of digital production processes, manipulation of conventional materials and new composites, our view of the essence of matter has changed. How does the material reflect questions of our contemporary way of living? Is the design process limited by its consideration?

A fundamental examination of the creative practice has opened up more questions than it can generate answers. Thus the work is not a closed project, but rather can be seen as the opening of new doors, a variety of impressions that have accompanied me on the way. I have translated my thoughts and findings in five glass objects and a kinetic textile installation.
